light and love shine from City by the Bay

On August 19th, we joined forces with glassybaby faithful, Trina Chow, to help raise money for the Immediate Impact Breast Cancer Walk, which will take place in San Francisco on September 28th through 30th.   Debra and Rae, our Seattle glassybaby contingent, traveled to the City by the Bay with over 400 glassybaby to sell at an event held at the Presidio Landmark.  A heartfelt thank you to everyone that turned out to support this very worthwhile cause. Over $1,200 was raised through event and online sales.

If you missed the roadshow, you can still support the 55-mile, 3-day walk, which will benefit three Bay area non-profit organizations providing services to low-income and under-served breast cancer patients.   For more information, go to www.immediateimpactwalk.org/.

Many of the people attending the sale, including Trina, are members of the Warming Hut Hotties.   The “hotties”, as they like to call themselves, are a group of more than 1,000 men and women who recently celebrated their 10th year as a team.  Together they have walked, crewed, and volunteered in 40 multi-day fundraising events and raised over $2.9 million for the breast cancer cause.

glassybaby is planning another roadshow to San Francisco in December. Additional details will be forthcoming.  To Trina, the Warming Hut Hotties and everyone participating in the inaugural Immediate Impact Breast Cancer Walk, we’ll be thinking of you on the weekend of September 28th.  Thank you for choosing to make a difference.  You inspire us.

This is where the end of cancer begins

That’s the promise and the premise behind Stand Up To Cancer, a charity launched in 2008 by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, whose goal is to raise funds to accelerate the groundbreaking research necessary to end cancer. Perhaps you saw the third annual Stand Up To Cancer telethon last Friday night, which raised $81 million in pledges. Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Justin Timberlake, Gwyneth Paltrow, Taylor Swift and many other well-known entertainers joined forces to share their personal cancer stories and help raise money and awareness for this worthwhile cause.

glassybaby is proud to announce our collaboration with Stand Up To Cancer, and introduce our newest giving set which supports their initiative to accelerate innovative cancer research. glassybaby will donate to Stand Up To Cancer 10% from the purchase price of the ‘stand up’ set from now through July 1, 2014.

At glassybaby, we stand up for:

anyone who’s been on the receiving end of a cancer diagnosis;

anyone who’s lost their hair;

anyone who’s been too sick from treatments to get out of bed;

anyone who’s life has been forever altered by cancer.

We stand up for the 1,500 Americans that lose their life to cancer each day.

Who do you stand up for?

summer in a drinker

juniper

Certain scents and flavors are unmistakable and just seem to invoke a particular season.   Few things say “summer” to me as much as lime and mint.   I love to have a bowl of limes (and lemons) in my kitchen at all times.  I use the zest and the juice in many dishes and beverages. There’s something about fresh citrus that really brings flavors to life.

A little over five years ago, I planted a large pot of mint on my patio.  As herbs go, it is easy to grow and very hardy in the Pacific Northwest.  In late fall, I completely cut the mint down to a few inches above the soil.  Each spring and summer for the past five years, I have been rewarded with a lush pot of mint.  This year the stems were well over 18 inches tall!  I use fresh mint in salads, cocktails, water, and tea.  As a garnish, fresh mint adds just the right amount of flourish to a variety of desserts like key lime pie and strawberry shortcake.  A sprig of mint and a fresh raspberry resting atop a frosted cupcake are simply a match made in heaven.

One of my favorite, go-to recipes for summer combines lime and mint.  It is a mojito-style drink that is delicious with our without spirits.  (As a hostess, I think it is really nice to be able to offer a “special” drink to those that don’t wish to consume alcohol.)  I blend up several batches of the mint-lemonade and then mix the drinks to order, as guests arrive.  Here’s the recipe:

Summer Mojitos

1 12-oz. can of lemonade concentrate, frozen

1 large bunch (12-15 stems) of mint, tops cut off and reserved for garnishing

Lemon-lime sparkling water, such as Talking Rain

Sliced strawberries for garnish

Lime wedges

Rum, tequila or vodka (optional)

1. Wash mint in a bowl of warm, salted water.  Rinse several times in cold water.

2.  Pinch off the top leaves of each mint stem, and reserve for garnish

3.  In a blender, combine the frozen lemonade concentrate, washed mint (stems and leaves) and 12 oz. of cold water.

4.  Blend on high for 2-3 minutes.

5. When the mixture is well blended, turn the blender off and let the mixture sit for approximately 5 minutes.

6.  Spoon off and discard the excess mint, which will rise to the top of the blended mixture.

7.  Pour the remaining mixture through a fine mesh strainer to remove any large pieces of mint.

8.  To assemble the drink:  Add ice to your drinker or wine glass.  Squeeze a lime wedge over the ice and add the wedge to the glass.  If using alcohol, add 1.5 ounces of white rum, tequila or vodka.  Add 2 ounces of mint-lemonade mix.  Add 1-2 ounces of sparkling water.  Stir to combine.  (If you omit the alcohol, mix 2/3 mint-lemonade mix with 1/3 sparkling water.)

9.  Garnish with a mint sprig and a sliced strawberry.

10.  Store any left over mint-lemonade in a glass container in the refrigerator.  It will keep for up to 5 days.  Shake well before using.

I hope you enjoy this mojito-style treat.  With our without alcohol, it is refreshing on a balmy summer night.  This beverage is a triple threat:  it smells good, looks amazing and will delight your palate.  Cheers to the unmistakable tastes of summer!

glassybaby donates $10K to Cancer Patient Assistance Fund

On August 23rd, glassybaby proudly presented a check for $10,070.90 to representatives from Swedish Medical Center for their Cancer Patient Assistance Fund.   This donation was funded through our June glassybaby seconds sale.   glassybaby wishes to acknowledge and thank the amazing glassybaby community that came out to support our sale and, in turn, this very worthwhile cause.

In the words of Lee Rhodes, glassybaby founder, “The goal of giving back is still the core of our mission, and so many stories begin and are fostered around these little beacons of hope, and the enormous gifts they allow us to bestow.”

No matter what kind of treatment a cancer patient receives, the fight against cancer is more than a physical challenge.  It poses hurdles in other areas of life as well, impacting everything from emotional well being to financial stability.

The Cancer Patient Assistance Fund at Swedish Medical Center is a restricted fund that receives donations from Swedish employees and members of the community.  Social workers at Swedish can use this fund in special cases where money is needed to meet non-medical needs and expenses of seriously ill cancer patients and their families.

Some of the ways this fund has recently helped cancer patients include:

Providing a plane ticket so that a 6-year-old granddaughter could come to Seattle and spend time with her grandmother who was battling stage 4-breast cancer.  The two had seen each other only one other time, and the grandmother was desperate to see her granddaughter before she died.

Providing financial support for back to school supplies and clothes to children of cancer patients.   No child wants to face the first day of school without a backpack of supplies, or worse yet, no backpack at all.

Providing assistance with rent, utilities, groceries, childcare and transportation costs to Swedish Medical Center.  With the struggling economy, many patients can no longer count on support from their extended families.

glassybaby is proud to partner with Swedish Medical Center in support of the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund.  If you missed the June glassybaby seconds sale, the next sale is slated for January of 2013.   Please plan on joining us.

For upcoming announcements regarding our seconds sale, follow us on Facebook or sign up for glassybaby e-mail here.

On the road again….to San Francisco

"Joy Glassybaby" 2012 oil on canvas 8 x 8 inches | by Trina Chow

As bright and unwavering as the glow from a glassybaby is the inspirational community that has grown up around them.  We never tire of hearing how glassybaby came into someone’s life, and how they are using glassybaby to transform their life and the lives of others.

A favorite customer, who has taken our mission of ‘giving back’ to heart, is Trina Chow.   Trina was given a glassybaby four or five years ago when a friend of hers moved to Seattle.   When Trina next traveled to Seattle, she and her friend visited our Madrona store where she was able to watch our glassblowers creating glassybaby.   Trina discovered her passion for these little vessels of hope and light!

Trina is one of several people planning the inaugural Immediate Impact Breast Cancer Walk, which will take place in San Francisco on September 28-30, 2012.  With the goal of raising $100,000, walk participants will cover 55 miles over three days.  Proceeds will benefit low-income and under-served breast cancer patients in the San Francisco area.

Trina’s latest effort to give back has inspired us to pack up a variety of glassybaby and venture to San Francisco.  On Sunday, August 19th, glassybaby will join forces with Trina at an open-to-the-public event at the Presidio in San Francisco.  Please join us for an afternoon of light, colorlove and giving!  10% of the sales from each glassybaby will be donated to the Immediate Impact Breast Cancer Walk.

We would love to see you this Sunday!

Thank you, Lindsey!

Last Friday, we gathered at glassybaby Madrona to say goodbye and thank you to Lindsey, who expertly handled inventory and quality control during her four-year tenure with us. Lindsey’s next adventure will take her to Los Angeles where she will begin studying to become a physical therapist.

If you purchased a glassybaby in the last four years, chances are pretty good that Lindsey had something to do with it. Whether she was cutting and checking in our color rods, organizing and inventorying all of our various packaging materials, or painstakingly checking glassybaby fresh from the annealing ovens, we were the lucky beneficiaries of her amazing organizational capabilities and attention to detail.

Lindsey was more than a valued employee and co-worker; she was our friend. We will miss her greatly. She was calm in the face of chaos, true blue dependable and could help you locate whatever you were looking for with GPS-like precision! The pain of saying goodbye is eased somewhat by the knowledge that she will be back in Seattle next summer for her wedding.

A Monday at glassybaby without Lindsey? It is hard to imagine. We will somehow muddle through, and remember the words of Richard Bach

“Don’t be dismayed at goodbyes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends.”

We will miss you, Lindsey. Farewell for now.

‘hope’ glassybaby light pancreatic cancer event

“Hope is something you have as a community, and you also have it within yourself.”

                                                                                    – Lee Rhodes

On Sunday, September 30th, glassybaby joined with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and participated in the PurpleLight National Vigil for Hope The Puget Sound event was held in Edmonds, and was one of 60 that took place across the country on the same day.  Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. and approximately 44,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed this year.   The vigil was an opportunity to encourage those currently fighting pancreatic cancer, and honor those who have lost their lives to this particularly aggressive cancer.

Use the promo code “purple light” with your online order between now and October 10th and glassybaby will donate 10% from the sale of your purchase to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
