On August 23rd, glassybaby proudly presented a check for $10,070.90 to representatives from Swedish Medical Center for their Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. This donation was funded through our June glassybaby seconds sale. glassybaby wishes to acknowledge and thank the amazing glassybaby community that came out to support our sale and, in turn, this very worthwhile cause.
In the words of Lee Rhodes, glassybaby founder, “The goal of giving back is still the core of our mission, and so many stories begin and are fostered around these little beacons of hope, and the enormous gifts they allow us to bestow.”
No matter what kind of treatment a cancer patient receives, the fight against cancer is more than a physical challenge. It poses hurdles in other areas of life as well, impacting everything from emotional well being to financial stability.
The Cancer Patient Assistance Fund at Swedish Medical Center is a restricted fund that receives donations from Swedish employees and members of the community. Social workers at Swedish can use this fund in special cases where money is needed to meet non-medical needs and expenses of seriously ill cancer patients and their families.
Some of the ways this fund has recently helped cancer patients include:
Providing a plane ticket so that a 6-year-old granddaughter could come to Seattle and spend time with her grandmother who was battling stage 4-breast cancer. The two had seen each other only one other time, and the grandmother was desperate to see her granddaughter before she died.
Providing financial support for back to school supplies and clothes to children of cancer patients. No child wants to face the first day of school without a backpack of supplies, or worse yet, no backpack at all.
Providing assistance with rent, utilities, groceries, childcare and transportation costs to Swedish Medical Center. With the struggling economy, many patients can no longer count on support from their extended families.
glassybaby is proud to partner with Swedish Medical Center in support of the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. If you missed the June glassybaby seconds sale, the next sale is slated for January of 2013. Please plan on joining us.
